Located in the northwest corner of Seattle, Carkeek Park is a hidden gem and a beautiful representation of a PNW beach. This 216-acre urban oasis offers stunning views of Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains, making it the perfect backdrop for your next family photo session.
Trails and Scenic Views at Carkeek Park
Carkeek Park boasts a network of hiking trails that wind through lush forests of Douglas fir, cedar, and hemlock trees. The South Ridge Trail offers panoramic views of Puget Sound and the surrounding mountains, while the Piper’s Creek Trail meanders along the creek, providing a peaceful setting for your photos.
Depending on your preferences, we can do some photos on the wooded trails first, and then head over to the beach!
Convenience and Amenities at Carkeek Park
Despite its natural beauty, Carkeek Park is conveniently located just a short drive from downtown Seattle. The park features picnic areas, playgrounds, and beach access, making it a great spot for families to spend a day outdoors. The beach is perfect for beachcombing and exploring tide pools, while the playgrounds provide a fun place for kids to play. And yes, the bathrooms are located near the playground and parking lot!
Tips for Your Visit
To make the most of your visit to Carkeek Park, consider scheduling your family photo session on a weekday to avoid crowds. Free parking is available at the park, but it can fill up quickly on weekends, so arrive early to secure a spot.
Carkeek Park is great as a photography location year round. In the Spring, the trails are turning green and things are budding. In the Summer, we can play in the water at the end of your session. And in the Fall, some of the trees are changing colors. Even on a dreary and gray winter Seattle day, your photos will embody the PNW beautifully. Just add a few layers so you’ll be warm enough!
Things to Consider
It can get windy at the beach, so layers are nice. Also, there is a railroad overpass pedestrian bridge (over a train track) with steps to go down to the beach. This bridge connects the rest of Carkeek Park to the beach on the western side of the railroad tracks. A train track runs along the Puget Sound, and is part of the Pacific Northwest rail corridor. If steps are challenging for your elderly family members, this may not be the family photo location for you.
