Mukilteo Lighthouse Park

If you are looking for a beautiful PNW location for your maternity or family photos, Mukilteo Lighthouse Park is a great option! Just a 20 minute drive north of Seattle, and conveniently located next to the Washington State Ferries terminal with ferry service to Clinton, on Whidbey Island, this lighthouse beach park boasts of sweeping views of the sound and neighboring islands. As a Seattle family photographer, this location is one of my favorites! There are so many reasons to consider it as your next photo session location.

This beach is a true representation of the PNW

First of all, this beautiful beach park checks all the boxes that a typical PNW beach would have–plus more! Expansive views of the Puget Sound? Check. Ferries passing by in the waters? Check. Beautiful driftwood to sit, climb and play on? Check. A rocky beach? Check.

Mukilteo Lighthouse Park not only checks all these boxes, but it also includes a historic lighthouse which is so fun to incorporate in your family photos!

You will come away from your maternity or family photo session with a wide variety of images when booking a photoshoot at this location. Just think–the dock, the fence, the lighthouse, the rocks and driftwood to climb on, and of course, the beach. These things all offer a vast assortment of backgrounds for your photos.

Additionally, the lighthouse beach park is a good option year round–spring, summer, winter and fall!

Mukilteo Lighthouse Park is easy to access and convenient

Not only does Mukilteo Lighthouse Beach Park offer a variety of backgrounds for taking family photos, it also is convenient and easy to access. Parking is literally next to the beach, making it super convenient. You don’t need to hike a long way to get to the beach, making it more accessible for people who may have difficulty walking long distances. There are also public bathrooms at the lighthouse beach park–you know how children always need to use the restroom at the last minute! And like I mentioned before, it’s not far from Seattle! The lighthouse beach park is pretty straightforward to get to….just follow the signs to the Whidbey Island Ferry Terminal!

As an added bonus, ice cream and fish & chips are within walking distance to the beach park for a yummy treat after your family photoshoot. You’re welcome!

Things to consider

A few things you may want to consider about this location is that it can get really busy on weekends. If possible, a weekday evening family photo session would be ideal.

Also note, It can be windy, since you are right next to the waterfront. And the wind also can be cold during certain times of the year. Be sure to layer your clothing accordingly! By the way, layers photograph beautifully, and I love using the wind to my advantage when taking photos!

Bonus: Dogs are allowed at Mukilteo Lighthouse park! (On leash, of course.) So you furry family member can join in on your family photoshoot as well!

Lastly, there is a playground at this park, on the far South end. This may be a fun treat for after your family photo session. Or it can be completely avoided, since it is on one end of the park and not super visible.
